Bitcoin Touches $81K After Midterms as Analysts Warn of Trap

Bitcoin Surges Past $81,000 in Post-Election Rollercoaster
Bitcoin experienced a wild ride on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. The world's largest cryptocurrency rebounded from an intraday low of $75,618 to surge past $81,000 for the first time since October 29.
By 12:35 p.m. EST, Bitcoin was trading near $80,335, marking a gain of nearly 4% on the day. This price move pushed Bitcoin's overall market capitalization back up toward $1.62 trillion.
What Caused the Dramatic Price Moves?
The market mood shifted rapidly on election night. According to data from Bitstamp, hours before the rally took off, Bitcoin dropped from near $78,000 to an intraday low of $75,618 shortly before midnight.
However, the digital asset reversed course as early returns signaled that Democrats might secure control of both houses of Congress. The initial ascent was gradual, taking almost eight hours to gain $3,000 and reach $78,600.
After consolidating above $78,200, price action accelerated sharply. Bitcoin spiked another $3,000 in under an hour, peaking at $81,105.

Over $970 Million Wiped Out in Crypto Liquidations
Sudden price swings like this often catch derivative traders off guard. When traders use high leverage, rapid jumps force positions to close automatically.
- Broader Market Liquidations: Data from Coinglass shows total crypto liquidations exceeded $974 million.
- Short Bets Wiped Out: Short positions accounted for over $563 million of total market liquidations.
- Bitcoin Short Liquidations: Over $307 million in Bitcoin short positions were wiped out in 24 hours (as of 1:21 p.m.).
- Bitcoin Long Liquidations: Long positions suffered over $96 million in losses.
- Total Bitcoin Liquidations: Combined Bitcoin liquidations topped $403 million.
Political Shifts Leave Policy Future Uncertain
The U.S. midterm election results delivered a notable shift for the crypto lobby. Despite pouring massive funds into campaign super PACs like Fairshake, the industry couldn't save several key pro-crypto Republicans from voter backlash against the Trump administration's second-term record.
With Democrats seizing control of both Capitol Hill chambers, political observers warn that pro-industry legislative initiatives may face tougher resistance in Congress.
Bipartisan Support Remains in Key States
Despite the legislative shift, MicroStrategy Executive Chairman Michael Saylor cautioned against viewing the outcome strictly through a partisan lens.
Saylor pointed to Florida electing a governor aligned with a federal bitcoin reserve, and Texas electing Democratic Sen. James Talarico—who previously voted to create a state bitcoin reserve—as clear signs of ongoing bipartisan backing.
Bitfinex Warns: Is This Rally a Leverage-Driven Trap?
While many market observers suggest Wall Street had already priced in the election results, analysts at Bitfinex warn that the post-election bounce might lack solid fundamentals.
Weak Spot Buying and ETF Outflows
According to the latest Bitfinex Alpha report, fresh spot buyers have not stepped in to support the rally. Instead, price recoveries since late October have been driven primarily by short covering, while recent spot buyers continue selling into short-term price spikes.
Furthermore, ongoing withdrawals from U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have turned aggregate 2026 net flows slightly negative. This removes a key source of regular buying demand.
Key Derivatives Data to Watch
Bitfinex highlights several technical indicators suggesting the market's foundation remains fragile:
- Futures Open Interest: Aggregate Bitcoin futures open interest climbed to 701,548 BTCBTC+3.54% on Nov. 3, its highest level since late September.
- Funding Rates: Annualized perpetual funding rates hovered near 11%, showing heavy derivative reliance.
- Thin Spot Volume: Only about 353,000 BTC was purchased in the $75,000 to $77,000 price range.
Market Outlook and Potential Risk Scenarios
The Bitfinex report notes that if Bitcoin suffers a daily closing settlement below $75,839, it could expose a thin liquidity pocket down between $70,000 and $75,000.
Conversely, if spot buyers return and institutional ETF flows turn positive again, Bitcoin could establish firm support above $81,000. However, if spot demand remains low, short-term volatility could lead to further downward tests.
With the elections over, macro traders are refocusing on upcoming U.S. CPI inflation data and Federal Reserve interest rate policy. Current options positioning around the CPI release shows more than twice as many puts as calls, signaling that institutional investors are actively buying downside protection.
