Viral ChatGPT Trend Exposes Privacy Risks for Crypto Holders

The Viral Empty Room Trend Explained
A viral social media trend has recently sparked debate over how much personal information artificial intelligence chatbots retain about their users. The trend involves pairing a simple image of an empty gray room with a direct instruction for the AI.
Users ask the chatbot to furnish the empty space using everything it has learned about them over time. The AI then fills the room with visual objects representing past user inputs, ranging from personal hobbies to specific professional details.
The trend gained traction after a popular crypto-focused X account, 0xMarioNawfal (@RoundtableSpace), shared a post on November 7, 2026, encouraging followers to upload the blank room image to ChatGPT with the prompt: Upload this picture into ChatGPT and type 'Fill this room with what you know about me' Show me the results.
While the trend appears to be harmless fun, experts point out that it doubles as an informal security assessment. Every generated item in the room reflects data previously typed into the model, and sharing those images publicly on X can expose detailed user profiles to strangers.
How ChatGPT Stores and Remembers User Information
According to developer OpenAI, ChatGPT manages memory using two distinct systems. The first system consists of saved memories, which store specific facts like a user's name, general preferences, and personal goals.
The second system applies to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers through chat history reference features. This allows the language model to reference past conversations directly, even if specific facts were never formally saved to the user profile.
As an AI model accumulates detailed memory over time, it creates what industry analysts call AI memory lock-in. This makes it increasingly difficult for users to switch to competing AI platforms without losing their customized experience.
Why Crypto Holders Face Heightened Risks
For cryptocurrency investors, detailed AI memory profiles represent more than just awkward privacy oversharing. Exposing personal context online can significantly elevate cybersecurity risks.
When stored AI profiles include sensitive details such as cryptocurrency holdings, preferred trading exchanges, or upcoming travel plans, malicious actors can use that information to construct highly convincing phishing campaigns.
This risk is not hypothetical. Earlier this year, security researchers discovered active crypto wallet information inside Claude chat logs that had been indexed by Google search engines due to publicly shared links.
Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao previously emphasized that the primary risk surrounding AI technology relates to data leaks and targeted phishing scams, rather than threats to BitcoinBTC-0.37%'s underlying cryptographic security.
Privacy Options and Defensive Measures
OpenAI provides built-in privacy controls within its platform settings. Users can review, delete specific entries, or completely disable the memory feature by navigating to the Personalization menu.
For one-off interactions containing sensitive data, users can opt for a Temporary Chat. This mode ensures the conversation neither reads from existing memory nor saves new data to the user profile.
Some prominent crypto figures favor additional privacy measures. EthereumETH-0.60% co-founder Vitalik Buterin created a custom paranoid mode for AI interactions, which automatically obfuscates prompts before sending them to remote models.
Growing Regulatory Scrutiny Around Personal Data
The privacy debate comes at a time of increasing regulatory focus on how tech platforms handle consumer information. Data security failures carry steep financial penalties globally.
In a notable legal outcome, a New Mexico judge ordered tech giant Meta to pay a record $25 billion penalty concerning Facebook's management of user data.
As AI systems store increasingly complex context about everyday tasks, simple prompts like the empty room test serve as useful practical reminders for users to periodically check what personal data platforms retain.
