Liquid Network Restores Full Bitcoin Backing After Bug

What Happened to Liquid Network?
The Liquid Network has officially restored complete backing for its Bitcoin tokens. A final deposit of 250 Bitcoin (BTCBTC-0.85%) closed the remaining gap left by a major software bug in September.
While the network's reserves are balanced once again, a significant mystery remains. The governing body running the system has not revealed who actually paid to fill the multi-million dollar hole.
How Liquid and Bitcoin IOUs Work
To understand why this news is so important, it helps to understand sidechains. You can think of Liquid as a side road next to the main Bitcoin highway. It allows people to move funds faster and with more privacy.
When users deposit real Bitcoin into Liquid, they receive Liquid Bitcoin (L-BTC) in return. These L-BTC tokens act like digital IOUs or receipts. Every single L-BTC is meant to be backed 1-to-1 by actual Bitcoin stored securely in a reserve.
If that reserve loses funds, the tokens lose their real-world backing. That exact scenario unfolded during the September flaw, creating a missing balance worth around $320 million at the time.
Closing the $320 Million Gap
Fixing a shortfall of that size takes significant effort and capital. Over the past several months, contributions were made to restore the depleted reserves back to their original state.
The long recovery process finished with a final transfer of 250 BTC. With this transaction recorded on the blockchain, every L-BTC token in circulation is once again fully collateralized by real Bitcoin.
Who Paid the Bill?
The Liquid Network is controlled by a group of crypto companies called the Liquid Federation. This group manages the main vault and ensures the sidechain functions smoothly.
Despite fixing the balance sheet, the federation has not named the entity that covered the loss. They have not clarified if the funds came from insurance, corporate reserves, or an outside donor.
For users of the sidechain, the restoration of 100% backing brings welcome stability, even if the identity of their savior stays secret.
