Global Markets Drop Trillions as Bitcoin Slides to $76K

Global Markets Face Heavy Selling Pressure
Financial markets around the globe experienced a major reset on November 6, as a heavy sell-off swept through equities and spilled over into crypto.
Investors watched more than $1 trillion in market value vanish from Asian stock markets in a single day. This follows a loss of over $550 billion in the region just one day earlier.
At the same time, Wall Street suffered a massive $2.5 trillion wipeout. Cryptocurrency markets also felt the heat, with BitcoinBTC-5.73% sliding below the $76,000 level.
Why Asian Tech Stocks Took a Heavy Blow
The sharp pullback across Asia was driven by rapid dumping of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) stocks. Market participants grew concerned about upcoming US regulatory changes and a potential slowdown in spending on AI infrastructure.
Japan Enters Bear Market Territory
Japan recorded some of the largest losses in Asia. The Nikkei 225 index plunged 6% during Friday's trading session, pushing it officially into a bear market.
This latest fall leaves the Nikkei 21% below its record peak reached in June. In total, Japanese equities have erased roughly $450 billion in value.
Trading Halts in South Korea
South Korea experienced an even steeper drop. The KOSPI index collapsed by 9% to 4,912, which automatically triggered a temporary trading halt.
The KOSPI sits about 47% below its June high, wiping out nearly $203 billion. Major tech leaders felt the pain, as SK Hynix fell 12% and Samsung Electronics dropped almost 10%.
Losses Spread Across China and Taiwan
Selling momentum extended across Chinese and Taiwanese exchanges as well. Mainland China's Shenzhen index has now dropped 30% from its June high, wiping away nearly $210 billion.
The Shanghai Composite fell 1.1%, while the CSI 300 index lost 1.5%. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng fell 1%, and its specialized AI index tumbled 4%.
Meanwhile, Taiwan's TAIEX index slipped 3.2% over a 24-hour period. It now stands 24% below its record high set in October.
US Stocks Experience Steepest Drop in Months
Weakness in Asia followed Wall Street's worst single-day session in over a year. Broad index selling hit major American stock benchmarks across the board.
The S&P 500 pulled back 4.36% to end at 7,353.73. The tech-heavy Nasdaq dropped 6.52% to 24,315, placing it into official correction territory as it stands over 10% below its October peak.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 3.44%, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index crashed 10%. Leading semiconductor and cloud stocks like Nvidia, Broadcom, Oracle, CoreWeave, and Nebius suffered deep losses.
Bitcoin Pulls Back Below $76,000
The crypto market closely mirrored traditional equity movements. Bitcoin dropped from above $80,800 down to the $75,500 to $76,000 zone. However, investors should note that digital assets carry inherent short-term price volatility.
The Impact of Strong US Jobless Data
A key catalyst behind the crypto downturn was the release of the latest US Initial Jobless Claims report. Weekly claims unexpectedly fell to 189,000, coming in lower than the 197,000 forecast.
This reading pushed claims close to levels last seen in 1969. While low unemployment indicates economic strength, it also alters market expectations for interest rate cuts.
When economic data remains strong, central banks are less pressured to lower interest rates quickly. Higher borrowing costs tend to create headwind pressure for risk assets, including stocks and cryptocurrencies.
Liquidations Surge Across Crypto Exchanges
The rapid downward price movement in Bitcoin led to a wave of automated position clearings. Roughly $1 billion worth of crypto trades were liquidated across major exchanges.
Traders holding bullish bets were caught off guard, with long positions accounting for about 88% of all total liquidations.
Crypto-adjacent stocks were not immune to the market downturn. Shares of companies with major Bitcoin exposure, such as Coinbase and MicroStrategy, dropped around 10% to 11%.
Understanding Today's Market Context
Market pullbacks like this serve as a reminder of how interconnected global equities and digital asset markets have become. Shifts in macroeconomic data can rapidly influence investor sentiment across continents.
