Credit Mutuel Arkea Hit by $133M Hack Traced to Crypto

A Major French Bank Faces a CyberCYBER+0.00% Intrusion
Imagine waking up to find millions of dollars quietly moving out of a traditional bank and into crypto wallets.
That is exactly what happened to Crédit Mutuel Arkéa, one of France's prominent banking groups.
On November 4, 2026, the French lender publicly confirmed that it fell victim to a massive cyberattack.
Hackers managed to execute unauthorized transfers before routing the proceeds into digital asset platforms.
The banking giant manages nearly $238 billion (€211.5 billion) in assets and serves over 5.8 million members.
Tracing the Stolen Funds Across Crypto Platforms
The scale of the intrusion first came to light thanks to independent blockchain investigators.
On November 2, pseudonymous investigator Zach XBT flagged over $106 million withdrawn from centralized exchanges.
Further investigation uncovered an additional $27 million, pushing the total suspected stolen amount beyond $133 million.
Meanwhile, blockchain analytics firm Bitquery conducted a separate investigation into the movement of funds.
Bitquery mapped approximately $108.8 million in USDCUSDC-0.15% stablecoin withdrawals across three major crypto exchanges.
Their research highlighted the following details:
- The withdrawals involved Kraken, Crypto.com, and OKX.
- A total of 178 transactions were executed.
- The funds were directed to 15 specific destination wallets over a 21-hour period.
Note that Zach XBT and Bitquery used different tracking scopes. Their figures represent different angles rather than additive totals.
How Did the Cybercriminals Execute the Scheme?
How did traditional bank money make its way into decentralized crypto networks so quickly?
French journalist Grégory Raymond shed light on how the heist reportedly took place.
The security breach did not originate from a failure in crypto exchange infrastructure.
Instead, the attack began through Fortuneo, an online banking subsidiary owned by Crédit Mutuel Arkéa.
Criminals opened exchange accounts using falsified identity documents to bypass standard verification checks.
They then directed unauthorized traditional wire transfers from bank accounts directly into these exchange accounts.
Once deposited, the funds were swiftly converted into digital assets and withdrawn to external wallets.
Laundering Trail: From Stablecoins to Monero
After converting the money into crypto, the attackers moved fast to conceal the trail.
During the night of November 1-2, about $63 million in stablecoins was swapped for 27,553 Ether (ETH).
These trades utilized decentralized protocols, including UniswapUNI+6.42% X.
Subsequent fund transfers passed through instant-swap services and Monero (XMR), a privacy coin that hides transaction details.
Zach XBT criticized the delay in public notification following the breach.
Zach XBT suggested that over $30 million potentially eligible for freezing had already moved beyond straightforward recovery channels because disclosures came too late.
Are Bank Customer Funds Protected?
The primary concern for bank customers during an incident like this is account safety.
Crédit Mutuel Arkéa assured the public that depositors will not bear financial losses from this attack.
Crédit Mutuel Arkéa stated: "Crédit Mutuel Arkéa announces that it has been the target of a cyberattack that enabled fraudulent transactions to be carried out. This incident has been resolved and is now under control."
The lender clarified that operations are returning to normal under reinforced verification procedures.
The bank added: "Their interests are fully protected, and safeguarding their assets is an absolute priority."
The institution confirmed the financial losses will not impact the overall stability of the banking group.
However, Crédit Mutuel Arkéa warned its 5.8 million clients to stay vigilant against potential phishing attempts.
Key Lessons from the Cyberattack
This case highlights how modern cybercrime connects traditional finance with digital assets.
While funds ultimately entered crypto networks, the security breakdown began in traditional banking rails.
- The attack originated at online banking subsidiary Fortuneo, not via a crypto smart contract flaw.
- Fraudsters laundered over $133 million across stablecoins, EthereumETH+6.38%, and Monero.
- Crédit Mutuel Arkéa confirms customer accounts remain fully safe while security enhancements continue.
