China Central Bank Halts Solana Event After Skyline Ad

What Happened in Shanghai?
Imagine projecting a giant glowing logo for a crypto project on a famous skyscraper in a country where crypto promotion is banned. That is exactly what happened in Shanghai, and local authorities reacted very quickly.
On the evening of October 14, 2026, a team associated with SolanaSOL-4.82% joined forces with local Shanghai contractors. Together, they displayed large, bright logos of the SOL token across the facade of the Citigroup Tower.
This building is located in Lujiazui, the financial heart of Shanghai. The massive skyline display was meant to kick off the four-day Solana Accelerate China 2026 tour.
The People's Bank of China (PBOC) joined forces with Shanghai police to halt the event series. Financial regulators also launched an official investigation into local public relations and logistics teams that assisted with the campaign.
High-Profile Reactions in the Crypto Community
Before law enforcement intervened, the light show created significant excitement across social media platforms.
Solana Foundation president Lily Lu posted online about opening a new office inside the prestigious Shanghai tower. Meanwhile, Binance Chief Marketing Officer Rachel Conlan shared photos of the illuminated skyline on X.
Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, widely known as CZ, also commented on the situation. He called it amazing that Solana managed to run a public promotion and open an office in mainland China, noting that Binance's own BNBBNB-1.72% Chain had not accomplished that.
The Positioning Strategy Behind the Event
To organize an event series in mainland China, the tour promoters used a specific positioning strategy. The tour was scheduled to visit four major cities:
- Shanghai
- Hangzhou
- Shenzhen
- Beijing
Organizers marketed the event around general technology concepts rather than digital assets. The official agenda focused on artificial intelligence agents, robotics, and traditional software development.
By leaving cryptocurrency references off the main promotional materials, the organizers hoped to stay clear of local regulatory restrictions. However, the strategy did not satisfy local officials.
Police Shut Down the Session
The situation escalated on the morning of October 16, 2026, at the Shangri-La hotel in Shanghai. Police officers arrived unannounced and shut down the morning conference session entirely.
Event participants were escorted out of the building and held outside on the street for more than an hour while law enforcement examined the setup.
Initially, Lily Lu offered a operational explanation for the disruption. She stated that attendee registrations had quadrupled unexpectedly, leaving the physical venue unprepared to host the large crowd safely.
Central Bank Clarifies Its Stance
On November 6, 2026, representatives from the People's Bank of China addressed the situation in an interview with state news outlet Financial News.
The official explicitly classified the skyscraper display and related tour activities as illegal marketing of virtual currencies.
The central bank reiterated its regulatory stance. Officials emphasized that SOL is a cryptocurrency and that Solana's infrastructure supports token issuance and stablecoin circulation, including TetherUSDT+0.42%, which remains prohibited under mainland laws.
Strict Regulatory Rules and Local Liability
Regulators highlighted that the event breached joint guidelines established in February 2026 by eight Chinese government agencies.
Key elements of those rules include:
- A complete ban on promoting foreign cryptocurrency projects inside mainland China.
- Direct legal liability for Chinese citizens and local firms that provide logistics, venue assistance, or public relations for foreign crypto projects.
The Solana Foundation has not released a formal response to the PBOC statements. The action highlights mainland China's continued strict enforcement against offshore digital asset promotional activities.
Digital asset markets remain volatile, and regulatory policies vary significantly by region. Past performance of any digital asset or blockchain platform is no guarantee of future results.
