Bitcoin Struggles at $76K as Altcoin Losses Mount

BitcoinBTC+0.02% Faces Potential Fifth Straight Red Week
Bitcoin is having a challenging start to November. The world's leading digital asset by market capitalization is just hours away from closing in the red for the fifth consecutive week.
When traders talk about a red weekly close, they mean the price of the asset is finishing lower at the end of the week than where it began. Five red weeks in a row indicates sustained selling pressure across the market.
While Bitcoin has struggled to hold momentum, the altcoin market is suffering even more noticeable pain. Several prominent altcoins have posted heavy double-digit price declines over the past seven days.
A Rollercoaster Week: From Hacking News to Election Volatility
To understand how Bitcoin ended up hovering near $76,000, we need to trace back the series of major market events that unfolded over the past week.
The Binance Security Incident Triggered Immediate Dips
October ended on a troubled note when bad actors executed the largest crypto hack of the year in U.S. dollar terms. Attackers managed to siphon roughly $6.3 billion from Binance.
The immediate reaction from market participants was swift selling. Bitcoin's price tumbled sharply from around $81,000 down to $76,000 within just about an hour.
Buyers attempted to push the market back up, but the bounce attempt was short-lived. Bitcoin was halted around the $79,000 mark before momentum faded once again.
U.S. Elections and Sudden Wall Street Spikes
Heading into Tuesday, November 5, Bitcoin entered another phase of price weakness around $78,000 while investors waited for the results of the U.S. mid-term elections.
News of a Democratic sweep failed to spark upward momentum. Instead, selling pressure pulled Bitcoin down to a seven-week low of $75,800.
The market dynamic shifted quickly on Wednesday afternoon. Bitcoin mirrored a strong rally on Wall Street and surged sharply back toward local peaks, touching $81,000 once more.
Friday Pullback Erases All Gains
Unfortunately for market bulls, Wednesday's massive upward move was met by an equally rapid sell-off on Thursday and Friday.
Bitcoin wiped out all of its midweek gains and briefly slipped below $75,000 on Friday. This marked the first time Bitcoin fell below $75,000 since its breakout rally in August.
As of Friday, November 8, Bitcoin is struggling to mount a convincing recovery. It sits just inches below the $76,000 level.
Bitcoin Dominance Climbs Back to 60%
Despite recent price drops, Bitcoin's overall market capitalization stands firm at $1.520 trillion according to CoinMarketCap data.
At the same time, Bitcoin's market dominance has climbed back up to 60%.
Market dominance measures Bitcoin's market valuation relative to the total value of all cryptocurrencies combined. When Bitcoin dominance rises while prices fall, it typically signals that investors are pulling capital out of altcoins much faster than out of Bitcoin.
Altcoin Market Breakdown: Steep Losses Across Large Caps
While price action over the past 24 hours has been relatively calm, looking at the full 7-day picture reveals significant pain for altcoin holders.
Modest Dropters vs. Moderate Declines
A few large-cap altcoins managed to limit their weekly losses to relatively small percentages:
- EthereumETH-0.13%: Down between 1% and 3%
- Binance Coin (BNB): Down between 1% and 3%
- Monero (XMR): Down between 1% and 3%
Other major digital assets experienced sharper weekly sell-offs, dropping by up to 8.5% over the 7-day period:
- XRP (XRP)
- Solana (SOL)
- Dogecoin (DOGEDOGE-0.83%)
- Chainlink (LINK)
- CardanoADA-1.04%
Double-Digit Altcoin Drops
The heaviest declines were concentrated among several major layer-1 networks and top tokens, which lost double-digit percentages:
- NEAR Protocol (NEAR): Down 15%
- Bitcoin Cash (BCHBCH-5.23%): Down 13%
- Hyperliquid (HYPE): Down 12%
- Stellar (XLM): Down 11%
Beyond the top-tier market cap listings, several mid-cap tokens saw even steeper pullbacks:
- Ethena (ENA): Down over 18%
- Pump.fun (PUMP): Down over 14%
- Ondo Finance (ONDO): Down 12%
The Rare Exceptions in the Green
Despite widespread market weakness, a tiny group of cryptocurrencies managed to post weekly gains:
- TRON (TRX): Closed the week in positive territory
- BitTorrent (BTW): Showed mild green gains
- Zcash (ZEC): Rose 2% on the week, though its rally hit resistance around $1,330 on Thursday
Overall Crypto Market Cap Loses $100 Billion
The combined valuation of the entire cryptocurrency market shrank significantly over the past seven days. In total, the market lost roughly $100 billion.
As recorded by CoinMarketCap on November 8, the global digital asset market capitalization currently sits at $2.550 trillion.
Periods of high volatility are common in cryptocurrency markets. Investors often look at macroeconomic headlines, global political updates, and ecosystem news to gauge changing risk appetite.
